<p>The <a href="http://www.computergallerys.com/earth4homes.html" target="_blank">worldwide mobile phone market</a> shrank in the second quarter of this year, with sales falling by 2.3 percent compared to the same quarter a year ago, according to research company Gartner.</p>

<p>The reason for the decline was the &#8220;challenging economic environment,&#8221; Gartner said, as well as phone owners holding out for high-profile device launches later this year such as Apple&#8217;s iPhone 5.</p>

<p>Samsung&#8217;s growth was aided by strong Galaxy sales &#8212; particularly of its flagship<a href="http://www.computergallerys.com/nikolaenergys.html" target="_blank"> Galaxy S3 device</a>, which reached 10 million in the first two months after its release.</p>
<p>Overall global sales of mobile devices reached 419 million units in the quarter, with smartphone sales up by more than 42 percent year-on-year.</p>
<p>Emerging markets such as China and phone makers pushing 3G will &#8220;drive the smartphone market upward,&#8221; Gartner said, while feature phones sales will remain under pressure. Smartphones accounted for around 37 percent of all mobile devices sold in the second quarter of this year.</p>

<p>The forward euro zone EONIA overnight interest rate for December traded at 6 basis points on Friday, less than the average spread of 8 basis points over the ECB&#8217;s depo rate seen in the past few months.</p>
<p>The rate projected for December is just half of Thursday&#8217;s 0.12 percent EONIA settlement <a href="http://www.abigailprofitsystem.com/go/paidsurvey/3" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="paid survey" class="cloak">and</a> indicates that the <a href="http://www.abigailprofitsystem.com/go/linkedinforbusiness/0" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="linkedin influence" class="cloak">market</a> is pricing in a tiny possibility that the <a href="http://www.makemoneymachines.com/googlesniper2.0s.php" target="_blank">ECB deposit rate </a>may go below zero later this year.</p>
<p>&#8220;It does not seem to have been any serious flows in the market yet, but some in the market are starting to talk about this,&#8221; said Max Leung, an interest rate strategist at BofA Merrill Lynch Global Research.</p>
<p>Recent comments from ECB policymakers suggested that the central bank is keeping the door open for further easing, but the form any such step would take is unclear.</p>
<p>If the ECB ever does cut its refinancing rate from the current record low of 0.75 percent, the question arises whether it will keep the gap over the depo rate at the usual 75 basis points.</p>

<p>If the deposit rate turned negative, the ECB would have to change the way it manages banks&#8217; excess reserves in the current account as well if it wants to penalise banks for parking cash in the ECB&#8217;s safe coffers rather than lending to each other or to <a href="http://www.abigailprofitsystem.com/go/gsniper/10" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="google sniper" class="cloak">business</a>es.</p>
<p>The only certainty in the market about the ECB&#8217;s next move is that it will not cut the depo rate again in the near future, because it will take several months to assess the full impact of the July 5 cut to zero.</p>
<p>Many are already expressing serious doubts that the zero rate will spur activity in the interbank market <a href="http://www.abigailprofitsystem.com/go/paidsurvey/3" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="paid survey" class="cloak">and</a> filter through to the real economy.</p>
<p>In fact, some of the biggest money managers have already restricted access to European money market funds due to the almost non-existent returns. Besides, most banks are not lending because they do not trust each other and that may not change even if they are penalised for it.</p>
<p>&#8220;In an environment where it is return of <a href="http://www.makemoneymachines.com/viraltrafficleads.php" target="_blank">capital that counts,</a> rather than return on capital, you may well have to pay someone to be the guardian of your money,&#8221; said Simon Peck, rate strategist at RBS.</p>
<p>&#8220;Just because the deposit rate is zero or going lower doesn&#8217;t necessarily imply that straight away you can change your risk management frame<a href="http://www.abigailprofitsystem.com/go/gsniper/7" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="google sniper" class="cloak">work</a>.&#8221;</p>
<p>Peck said a further cut in the depo rate would push returns on <a href="http://www.abigailprofitsystem.com" target="_blank">short-term bonds issued</a> by top-rated countries such as Germany even deeper into negative territory. Two-year German yields last traded at minus 0.06 percent.</p>
<p>&#8220;Theoretically, it&#8217;s even possible for <a href="http://www.makemoneymachines.com/commissioncashcodes.php" target="_blank">Eonia rates to go negative going </a>forward,&#8221; said Peck.</p>
<p>BofA Merril Lynch&#8217;s Leung said Euribor futures , which currently trade around 99.60-99.65 on the 2012 strip &#8212; implying the euro zone benchmark three-month interbank Euribor rate could fix at 0.35-0.40 percent later this year &#8212; could &#8220;trade somewhere at 99.90, 99.95 or even 100.&#8221;</p>

The problem is especially complicated when they are supervising entry level staff who earn very little money and often have second jobs in order to meet their families needs; routinely <a href="http://www.abigailprofitsystem.com/go/gsniper/7" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="google sniper" class="cloak">work</a>ing 16 hours in every 24 will slow down anyone.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Put a Gun to Their Heads</p>
<p>Over the years, I believe there have been three basic ways that have been used to <a href="http://www.directmaildirectmarketing.com/bloggingchow.html" target="_blank">motivate the workforce</a>. The first one is what I call the &#8220;gun to the head approach&#8221;. When this approach is used supervisors tell employees how things will be done and there is an implied or direct threat that if they do not do it that way, they will be subject to ridicule, discipline or termination. This approach works pretty well as long as the supervisor has an appropriately demanding temperament and is there to hold the gun. When the supervisor is not there, the system of control breaks down. That is why organizations that operate 24 hours per day and 7 days a week, can be different places on the overnight shift and on the weekends than they are during normal business hours when the supervisory structure is in place.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Give Them Cake</p>
<p>The second major way which has been <a href="http://www.abigailprofitsystem.com/go/paidsurvey/3" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="paid survey" class="cloak">and</a> is being used to motivate employees is to enhance their benefits, give them special recognition or pay them more money. As appropriate as these measures might be, the workplace scientists who measure employee response to different supervisory approaches have repeatedly found that a pay raise for example makes a positive effect on motivation for only about ten days! So when organizational leaders tell me that in order to retain <a href="http://www.abigailprofitsystem.com/go/paidsurvey/3" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="paid survey" class="cloak">and</a> motivate staff that they sponsor recognition banquets, achievement pins and compensation increases, I wince a little because my experience and research tells me that they have selected a very short term strategy.</p>
<p>The first two approaches I have briefly discussed, &#8220;Put a Gun to Their Heads&#8221; and &#8220;Give Them Cake&#8221; are still seen in varying degrees in almost every industrial and economic sector. I believe these approaches are behind the bad reputation that supervisors often have with their employees. A recent study by Florida State University indicated that in alarming numbers, employees:</p>
<p>o did not trust their supervisors<br />
o received only negative feedback from supervisors<br />
o felt that their supervisors placed blame on them for their own supervisory mistakes<br />
o felt that their supervisors did not respect their privacy or maintain any sense of confidentiality following their discussions.</p>
<p>Thankfully, things are changing. Those old, control, domination-oriented supervisory approaches are slowly but surely being replaced by a model which utilizes the relationship between the supervisor and employee. Robert Hargrove in his book, Masterful Coaching, calls this the Internal Commitment Model.</p>
<p>Internal Commitment</p>
<p>Dwight Eisenhower said that &#8220;leadership is about getting other people to do things the way you want them done because they want to do it that way.&#8221; The clear implication of that statement is that employees accomplish things because they want to please their supervisor. Several factors go into the development of this mutually productive relationship in which the employee becomes committed to the vision, goals and objectives of the supervisor. What makes this relationship successful is not unlike the development and maintenance of any other relationship that we humans experience.</p>
<p>Here is what it takes:</p>
<p>o A commitment to the success of the employee on the part of the <a href="http://www.directmaildirectmarketing.com/bloggingchow.html" target="_blank">supervisor; the supervisor </a>must do what is necessary in terms of preparation, support and training to make sure the employee is successful. This approach must kick in from day one of the employee&#8217;s on the job experience. It will not work if it is delayed until the employee begins to have problems.</p>
<p>o Demonstrated concern for the welfare of the employee. There cannot be a clear demarcation between what is <a href="http://www.abigailprofitsystem.com/go/gsniper/10" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="google sniper" class="cloak">business</a> and what is personal. The two must be integrated and employees must experience their supervisor&#8217;s support for their personal as well as their professional success. Supervisors should not be &#8220;nosy&#8221; but can still show support for the personal struggles and goals that the employee has.</p>
<p>o The supervisor&#8217;s concern must be consistent and ongoing. It cannot be withdrawn when things seem to be going well. All good relationships require maintenance from time to time, and this is no exception.</p>

<p>o Problem solving must allow for input from all effected parties. Solutions designed by the supervisor and passed on to the employee will not be consistently implemented.</p>
<p>o The supervisor must be totally committed to the self-improvement of his or her &#8220;people skills&#8221;. Sometimes they will need to be very creative in laying new paths which lead to employee buy-in. But that is the way it is supposed to be&#8230;supervisors must find ways to get the work done without ending up doing the work themselves. Leaders work &#8220;on the <a href="http://www.abigailprofitsystem.com/go/gsniper/10" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="google sniper" class="cloak">business</a>&#8221;, not &#8220;in the business&#8221;.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>o When things go wrong, the supervisor must first ask, &#8220;what role have I played in the development of this mess&#8221; and how can I as well as my employees l<a href="http://www.abigailprofitsystem.com/go/gsniper/5" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="google sniper" class="cloak">earn</a> from this experience. That does not mean that you do not look for the role that others have played too but pointing the finger at others should not be the first response.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>And so, as you look at the level of motivation exhibited by your staff, what do you see? Is their compliance with policies and procedures dependent upon your personal presence? Are you hoping that next month&#8217;s planned pay raise will <a href="http://www.directmaildirectmarketing.com/bloggingchow.html" target="_blank">improve staff morale</a>? They say that &#8220;people don&#8217;t leave jobs, they leave supervisors.&#8221; Is bad supervision, that is supervisors who do not know how to develop collaborative, supportive relationships with their staff, are those supervisors costing you good staff? And what is the cost for under production, for inconsistent policy and procedure compliance? Is it fair to assume that employee motivation problems might be costing your organization $200 per day? That doesn&#8217;t sound like much per day but over the cost of a year, bad supervision might be costing you more than $70,000 per year.</p>

<p>Employees are an extension of the manager. They are responsible for carrying out the strategic operational objectives of the management team. They will have targets to meet, calls to make, tasks to complete, meetings to attend <a href="http://www.abigailprofitsystem.com/go/paidsurvey/3" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="paid survey" class="cloak">and</a> reports to write. But how does a manager motivate these different personalities to do well?</p>

<p>I consider management to be an art form rather than a vocation. Others were absolutely useless and didn&#8217;t have a clue how to manage at all.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Of all the managers I have worked with, the defining quality which<a href="http://www.directmaildirectmarketing.com/mobilemoneypagess.html" target="_blank"> differentiated the best </a>from the worst was <strong>RESPECT</strong>. If a manager respects the employee, the employee will return that respect through increased productivity. If the manager has no respect for the employee, the employee will adopt a negative attitude towards work and will not consider it to be important.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Employees must be motivated to do what they are paid to do. Let&#8217;s look at some of the ways in which managers can get the best out of their workforce:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>1) <strong>Communicate</strong>. Good managers will <em>always</em> ensure that the channels of communication between themselves and workers remain open. A manager who is visible and talks to staff regularly will always be seen in a better light than managers who rarely show their face. The relationship between a manager and employee needs to be cultivated and developed over time. Ensuring good communication is a key step towards becoming a better manager.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>2) <strong>Respect</strong>. I mentioned it earlier, however this means more than just opening doors or being polite. Respect for a person means acknowledging their presence, accepting their individuality, realizing their personal worth and disregarding position or status. Managers and employees are still human. Managers who expect employees to be like robots in carrying out every set task will soon realise it is a poor method of management. Treat staff like human beings and they will reciprocate.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>3) <strong>Criticism</strong>. I have seen countless times how downhearted and embarrassed employees feel when they are criticised openly in front of others. This may give the manager a feeling of authority or power however it does nothing for the credibility and self esteem of the employee. The negativity felt by the employee will be significantly increased if the entire team witnesses the event. Criticism should be constructive, given in private and delivered in such a way that the receiver has a chance to respond and get their view across.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>4) <strong>Incentive</strong>. Nothing is worse in a<a href="http://www.directmaildirectmarketing.com/mobilemoneypagess.html" target="_blank"> work environment than</a> a situation where working extremely hard has no reward other than remuneration. Every employee will have targets or deadlines to meet. To get workers to perform better, there must be incentives in place to reward hard work and effort which results in the employee exceeding the set targets. If the target is to increase productivity by x%, what will the employees get for reaching it? Any incentive must be worthwhile and must reflect the amount of effort it took to reach or exceed it.</p>

<p>5) <strong>Empowerment</strong>. If a manager wants employees to perform well, they must provide them with the knowledge, tools, training, confidence and expertise to be able to carry out the work to a competent level. Workers who are not empowered to perform will end up stressed out with no clear direction and their performance will suffer. A good manager will always ensure his or her workers are knowledgeable and fit to carry out their duties. <p>6) <strong>Reputation</strong>. Employees will consciously make efforts or excuses to avoid a manager with a bad reputation. They will automatically know that such a manager will have nothing positive to say and will focus on the &#8216;stick&#8217; rather than the &#8216;carrot.&#8217; On the flip side, employees will gladly associate with or work for a manager with a good reputation or someone they like, because they will feel comfortable in their presence and will enjoy working for that manager. <p>A motivated workforce will be a productive workforce. It is far better to have happy, empowered, motivated staff than it is to have bored, unhappy, demoralized staff.
